چکیده
Differences in individual locomotor activity patterns may be linked to a number of ecological factors, such as changes ambient temperature or photoperiod. Observations on subterranean mammals suggest that they exhibit diel rhythms despite the lack visual cues their underground burrows, but it is unknown how seasonality and characteristics affect activity. In this study we use RFID technology monitor daily wild, social Natal mole-rats ( Cryptomys hottentotus natalensis ) during summer winter investigate varies with season whether depends body mass, sex reproductive status. We found winter, individuals were more active time highest soil temperatures, whereas summer, showed bimodal pattern early morning late afternoon coinciding cooler temperatures. Individual characteristics, including status, did not general indicating non-reproductive contribute equally cooperative behaviors. behavioral adaptation avoid extreme burrow temperatures mechanism maintain stable core temperature. highlight advantages wild small mammal movements.

Thermoregulation and metaboHc acclimation in the Natal mole - rat ( Cryptomys hottentotus natalensis ) ( Roden tia : Bathyergidae )
The social Natal mole-rat Cryptomys hottentotus natalensis has a mean (± S.D.) resting metabolic rate (RMR) when newly captured of 1.03 ± 0.25 cm^ O2 g~^ (n = 7) at an ambient temperature (Ta) of 30 °C, within the thermoneutral zone (TNZ) of 30-31.5 °C. Two months after maintenance in the laboratory at 26 °C, the RMR of the same animals showed a concomitant drop in value of 20 % at 30 °C (TNZ) ...
متن کاملThe reproductive biology of the solitary Cape mole- rat, Georychus capensis and the social Natal mole-rat, Cryptomys hottentotus natalensis (Rodentia: Bathyergidae)
The seasonality of wild caught Cape mole-rats was investigated, focusing on endocrine, neuroendocrine and neuroanatomical parameters. The Cape mole-rat reproduces only during the winter rainfall period of the western Cape Province. Interestingly, the gonadal steroid hormones do not show any significant seasonal patterns in either males or females. In addition, the pituitary does not exhibit a r...
متن کاملLocomotor Activity and Body Temperature Patterns over a Temperature Gradient in the Highveld Mole-Rat (Cryptomys hottentotus pretoriae)
African mole-rats are strictly subterranean mammals that live in extensive burrow systems. High humidity levels in the burrows prevent mole-rats from thermoregulating using evaporative cooling. However, the relatively stable environment of the burrows promotes moderate temperatures and small daily temperature fluctuations. Mole-rats therefore display a relatively wide range of thermoregulation ...
متن کاملCircadian rhythms of locomotor activity in the Lesotho mole-rat, Cryptomys hottentotus subspecies from Sani Pass, South Africa.
The Lesotho mole-rat is a social subterranean rodent that occurs at altitude in the Drakensberg mountain range. As a consequence of living permanently underground these animals rarely if ever are exposed to light. The visual system of African mole-rats is particularly regressed whereas the circadian system is proportionately conserved. This study investigated the locomotor activity patterns of ...
